Father’s Day is another one of those days that brings out the best of Engadine Bowling Club. Families fill the club, tables get pushed together, and there’s a warmth in the room that says exactly what this place is about: connection and the people who matter most.
This year, we wanted to mark the occasion by turning to our own team. We asked a few of them to share what they love and admire about their dads, from the skills they’ve picked up to the sayings that have stuck. What we got back was funny, heartfelt, and honestly, a little bit dad-joke heavy, in the best possible way.
Because the things that make a great dad, and the things that make a great club, aren’t all that different: showing up, having a laugh, and always being there when it counts.
Here’s what our team had to share:
What’s something your dad is good at, or something you’ve always admired about him?
Nicole – My dad is great at any handyman jobs. He also rebuilds old cars which not many people can do. He loves old Holden Sandman’s.
Rose – Making people laugh even when they are in a bad mood.
Jasmin – My dad has always been great at making rooms light and fun. He is effortlessly cheery no matter what the world serves him. He is the type of person everyone wants to have around, which I think makes him an excellent model of kindness and good spirit.
Is there one piece of advice from your dad that has stuck with you?
Rose – Don’t let people who don’t matter affect you.
Jasmin – Not to double bounce someone on the trampoline.
What’s your favourite memory or moment with your dad?
Julia – Running together and how he always comes to watch my netball games and puts his hand up to be the scorekeeper to be involved.
Rose – Going down the coast on holidays with him and my family.
Jasmin – My favourite memory with my dad is going fishing with him out on his boat, where I would consistently catch bigger fish than him and he would never be bitter.
What’s your dad’s favourite saying or catchphrase?
Julia – “I can’t do it tomorrow, I will be washing my hair” (he is bald) is his favourite go-to saying that never fails to make me laugh.
Jasmin – My dad’s favourite saying would be the repeated mention of his hole in one, such as, “If you’d ever gotten a hole in one, you’d understand.”
What’s one thing you’ve definitely inherited from your dad, good or bad?
Julia – How competitive I am and always getting involved. I also think I have gotten his sense of humour, and we find ourselves very funny.
Nicole – My height! Dad is very tall and I want to be shorter so I can wear heels.
Rose – The ability to find humour in things that are negative and make it more positive.
If your dad could choose the perfect Father’s Day, what would it involve?
Julia – It would be going to the dog beach with everyone and then out for breaky afterwards.
Rose – Golf in the morning, going to lunch then watch X-Factor on YouTube.
From handyman skills to hole-in-one stories, dog beach mornings to a healthy dose of competitive spirit, it’s clear our dads have left their mark in all sorts of ways, some inherited, some just fondly remembered.
