Mother’s Day is one of the biggest days of the year at Engadine Bowling Club, and it’s easy to understand why. There’s something about this time of year that brings people together, filling our club with families, laughter and the kind of warmth that reminds us of what community is really about. At the Bowlo, that sense of belonging is something we cherish every day, and Mother’s Day is one of those days where it shines brightest of all.
This year, we wanted to celebrate in a way that felt true to who we are. So we asked a few of our team members, the familiar faces who make this place feel like home, to share the best piece of advice their mum ever gave them. What came back was a beautiful reminder that behind every great community are the values instilled in us long before we ever walked through these doors. Values like kindness, resilience, gratitude and trusting the people around you.
Because when you think about it, the things that make a great mum and the things that make a great community are not all that different. Here’s what our team had to share:
Dan didn’t have to think too hard about his answer. His mum’s best advice? “Always lend a hand to others, you never know what’s going on in their lives, and it always brings some positivity.” It’s the kind of wisdom that fits perfectly in a place like the Bowlo, where looking out for each other is just part of who we are. And when it comes to something she says that has stuck with him? “Anything in life worth doing is worth overdoing.”
Nicole, one half of our famous sister duo, shared some words of wisdom from her mum: “No matter how hard life gets, things always get better.” Simple, grounding, and the sort of thing you need to hear when life throws you a curveball. But her mum’s most memorable saying? That would be the classic: “If you don’t eat your crusts, your hair won’t go curly.” A universal mum truth, and we’re not here to argue with it.
Shannen, Nicole’s sister and fellow supervisor, has always been guided by her gut and her mum is the reason why. Her best advice: “To always go with your gut instinct, which has served me well on a few occasions.” Anyone who has watched Shannen in action behind the bar or on the floor will tell you it shows. As for what used to drive her up the wall growing up? “You’ll understand when you are older.” She admits it used to bug her until she got older and, well, understood. Mums are usually right.
Josh brought a bit of a grin to the room with his mum’s best piece of advice: “Kill people with kindness, it’s more satisfying.” Honestly, it’s hard to argue with that logic. And the saying that has never left him: “There is always someone worse off, be grateful with what you have.” A reminder that hits differently when you stop and actually sit with it.
Reading through these responses, a thread runs through all of them: gratitude, perspective, kindness and resilience. Whether it came wrapped in a life lesson or hidden inside a warning about curly hair, the things our mums taught us have a funny way of following us around.
Celebrate the mum in your life this Mother’s Day at Engadine Bowling Club.
