At Engadine Bowling Club, we pride ourselves on creating a welcoming environment where competitive excellence meets community spirit. Behind the scenes of our thriving bowls programs, successful tournaments, and inclusive social events is our dedicated Sports and Community Coordinator, Wes Falconer.

From coaching our elite Engadine Cougars to fostering grassroots participation through Thursday evening social bowls, this role touches every aspect of our club’s sporting life. With a unique background spanning trades, human services, and bowling administration, Wes brings a wealth of experience and genuine passion for connecting people through sport.

We sat down to learn more about the day-to-day responsibilities that keep Wes busy, and the vision behind our club’s sporting success.

Tell us a little about your role as Sports and Community Coordinator?

My role here at Engadine Bowling Club is diverse, which I find both challenging and interesting. I am involved in an oversight/advisory capacity with our committees that are responsible for the day-to-day running of bowls within the club.

I am also involved in the High-Performance side of our bowls program. Coaching, recruiting, selecting, all allow me to be involved with our bowling members right through the grades.

I am the point of contact for our club sponsors, which is a great opportunity for me to broaden our club’s interaction within our local community.

I also run our tournament program throughout the year. We have several events throughout the year, which provide opportunities for all skill levels to get involved with competitive bowls.

Can you share a little about your previous roles and your journey to becoming Sports and Community Coordinator at Engadine Bowling Club?

I have had a very diverse working life, ranging from working in trades on building sites to working in human services in counselling/case management, and coordinating in bowling clubs.

What events have the Engadine Cougars been involved with so far this year?

The Engadine Cougars take great pride in competing at the highest level possible and in the last year we have achieved some fantastic successes. Our bowling members have won various region, state and even national medals over the last 12 months. We have many bowlers representing at the regional, state and national levels.

In NSW the pinnacle of pennant bowls is The Platinum League and we had a very successful season in 2025 making the playoffs, being defeated by defending champions Cabramatta.

Are there any highlights from this year that you’d like to share?

One of my highlights this past year has been my involvement with the NSW Para team as the coach. Two of our club members here at Engadine Bowling Club are involved in the NSW side, and I have thoroughly enjoyed investing in this group. We will be travelling to Tasmania in early November to compete in the upcoming Nationals.

Can you tell us about any upcoming social bowls events at the club? How can people get involved?

Over the past 18 months I have worked hard to promote Thursday evening social bowls. This presents a great chance for working people and new bowlers to access the game and we have seen a healthy number of people use this access point to take the game up both socially and competitively. We run different formats throughout the year and it’s great to see people enjoying the game, the atmosphere and the company in this setting.

What do you enjoy about the sport of lawn bowls?

Lawn Bowls as a game, provides an opportunity for all people, regardless of age, cultural heritage, sex, disability etc to compete on the same field of play. The nature of this game means you could easily find yourself playing with or against a World Champion on any given day – no other sport that I know of allows for this kind of opportunity.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the Engadine Bowling Club community?

I take very seriously the role Engadine Bowling Club plays in people’s lives. As we get older and it becomes physically challenging to remain involved, we have ways to assist people, whether that be with coaching or with bowling aids. Bowls is so much more than just a game. It is a community and a social connector that is so important in keeping people involved in the world around them. I love the opportunity I have to foster the great club culture we have here at Engadine Bowling Club.
